Terms of use

This assessment allows a dermatologist to assess your skin for suitability for treatment with hydroquinone cream. You will be prompted to book a follow-up telephone consultation with Dr Jalilian at the end of this form.

It is up to the doctors discretion to decide if it is appropriate to issue you with a prescription for hydroquinone.

If a prescription is offered, it is up to the doctors discretion to decide on the duration of treatment provided on the prescription, although this is usually for a 12 month period.

Hydroquinone preparations are sometimes mixed with tretinoin and hydrocortisone.  Tretinoin can cause dry and irritated skin when used incorrectly.

Tretinoin can make your skin more sensitive to the harmful effects of the sun.

Strict protection from UV rays emitted by the sun is essential during treatment to decrease your risk of skin cancer development.

Hydroquinone preparations must not be used if you can become pregnant, are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Fees

The cost of this process is $149.

You will be prompted to make payment at the end of this process.

This fee does not include the fee for Skin Plus Compounding Pharmacy to provide the dispensed hydroquinone cream.

Alternatively, you may wish to arrange a standard consultation with a dermatologist at Melbourne Skin & Dermatology.  Please call 03 8595 4288 should you wish to arrange this.  No rebates from Medicare are available for cosmetic consultations.

If it is deemed unsuitable for the doctor to issue you with a prescription, you will receive a full refund of your payment.

Please note that you may request to have your script sent to you or to an alternative compounding pharmacy, other than Skin Plus Compounding Pharmacy. A nominal administration fee may apply if a script is to be sent to an external pharmacy.

A little about hydroquinone

Hydroquinone is primarily used in dermatology to lighten areas of darkened skin such as seen in melasma and post-inflammatory pigmentation. It works by decreasing the production and increasing the breakdown of melanin pigments in the skin. This in turn helps to lighten the darkened skin areas and achieve a more even skin tone. In some cases, hydroquinone may be used alongside other treatments such as topical retinoids (ie tretinoin) and cortisones.  It can be used in conjunction with chemical peels and lasers to enhance skin lightening effects.

It is important to use hydroquinone cautiously and under professional guidance. This is because misuse or overuse can lead to a condition called ochronosis, a bluish-black discoloration of the skin. To minimise this risk, hydroquinone should not be used longer than a 3 month period without a break.  Treatment can resume for another 3 month period after a 2-3 month break.  It is essential to apply it only to the affected areas and avoid contact with the eyes, nose, mouth, or open wounds. It is important to avoid sun-exposure and to apply a tinted sunscreen while using hydroquinone to avoid worsening of your condition.

Hydroquinone may cause harm to an unborn baby or breastfeeding infant. It must not be used in the setting of pregnancy, pregnancy planning or breastfeeding.
